The Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative achieved about 70 percent of its production target for 2011.
The environmental NGO exported 50 bicycles to Austria, 10 to China and five to the USA.
Ghana Bamboo Bikes design, develop and market multi-purpose bikes and related products and services using native bamboo.
Co-Founder of the Initiative, Bernice Dapaah describes the past year as fruitful but challenging. According to her, the organization managed to reach its self-actualization stage by international business awards.
The Initiative is now turning attention to meeting the transportation needs of local communities, targeting the Nkawie and Offinso districts of Ashanti for a pilot distribution of bamboo bikes.
Ms. Dapaah tells Luv Biz Report this is part of plans to scale up production.
We are scaling up our industry from the Greater Accra to the Ashanti region and very soon, in the first quarter of this year, we're going to start with the training of the youth. We're trying to get in stock at least 300-400 bamboo frames at any point in time for local and international use, she stated.
Ms. Dapaah says a bamboo plantation will also be established as part of efforts to support climate mitigation strategies.
