Government proposes 43 new municipal and district assemblies

Accra, Oct. 13, GNA – Government on Thursday announced the creation of 43 new municipal and district assemblies to reflect on its commitment to enhance democracy at the grassroots.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in Accra said Volta Region had the highest of seven, followed by Northern Region with six and Greater Accra, Western and Eastern Regions each with five.


Brong Ahafo Region has four, Ashanti, Central and Upper East Regions have three each with Upper West Region two.

In the Volta Region, Aflao Municipality with capital at Aflao has been proposed from Ketu South District.

The rest are, Akatsi District has been separated into Avenor District with capital at Akatsi and Ave District with capital at Ave Dakpa, Afadzato District with capital at Ve Golokwati has been proposed from Hohoe Municipality.

Adaklu District with capital at Adaklu Waya has been proposed from Adaklu Anyigbe District, North Tongu District with capital at Battor-Dugame, North Dayi with capital at Anfoega and Krachi Ntsumuru with capital at Chinderi.

The six newly proposed districts in the Northern Region are Daboya District with capital at Damongo, Mion District with capital at Sang, Sagnerigu District with capital at Sagnerigu,

Kumbungu District with capital at Kumbungu, Tamale Sanguli District with capital at Tatale, and Mamprugu-Moagduri District with capital at Yagaba.

In the Eastern Region, the five proposed districts are Denkyembuo (Akwatia) District with capital at Akwatia,

Afram Plains South District with capital at Tease, Ayensuano

District with capital at Coaltar, Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality with capital at Nsawam and Upper West Akim District with capital at Adeiso.

The five new municipality and districts in Greater Accra Region are, Madina Municipality with capital at Madina, Ada West (Sege) District with capital at Sege, Ningo-Prampram District with capital at Prampram, Nii Okaiman with capital at Sowutuom, and Kpone Katamanso with capital at Kpone.

In Brong Ahafo Region, the four new districts are Asutifi South District with capital at Hwidiem, Sene East District with capital at Kajeji, Dormaa West District with capital at Nkrankwanta and

Banda with capital at Banda Ahenkro.
In the Upper East Region, the three new districts are Pusiga District with capital at Pusiga, Nabdam District with capital at Nangodi and Builsa South with capital at Fumbisi.

The two new proposed district in Upper West Region are, Nandom with capital at Nandom and Nadowli East with capital at Issa.

The three new proposed districts in the Central Region are Kasoa Municipality with capital at Kasoa, Ekumfi District with capital at Essarkyir, and Twifo Ati-Morkwa District with capital at Twifo Praso.

In the Western Region, the five new proposed districts are,

Bia East District with capital at Adaborkrom, Amenfi Central District with capital at Manso Amenfi, Mpohor District with capital at Mpohor, Bodi District with capital at Bodi and Suaman District with capital at Dadieso.

The three new municipality and districts in the Ashanti Region are Asokore Mampong Municipality with capital at Asokore Mampong, Agogo District with capital at Agogo and Sekyere Afram Plains North District with capital at Drobonso.
