NANA OKYERE Tawiah Antwi, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asawase constituency in the Kumasi Metropolis, has announced his intention to unseat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, so as to be able to improve the lot of the constituents.

He said the constituency lacks the needed development and, therefore, needs a person committed to their welfare to champion the proper development of the area. 'All that the constituency needs is a development oriented person to champion the developmental needs of the people', he said.

The NPP aspirant has debunked claims that the Asawase constituency is the traditional stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The parliamentary aspirant also said that the Asawase constituency is not a Moslem community, because the Akan population stands at about 23,000 while Moslems constitute about 6,000 of the over 35,000 population.

Nana Antwi told The Chronicle in an interview in Kumasi that the NPP is working to bring development to the constituents, in order to break the myth surrounding the claim that makes   the NDC think that Asawase is their sole preserve.

According to him, the NDC has over the years paid lip service to the development of the constituency and shirked its responsibility to cater for the welfare of the constituents and the constituency which they profess to 'own'.

The NPP aspirant said Asawase, which needs development, should not be divided over partisan lines, stressing that the Zongo factor does not apply when one is talking about development.

He indicated that he has since May, this year, embarked on an exercise to identify the needs of the constituents and provide solutions towards displacing the incumbent NDC Member of Parliament, Alhaji Mubarak Mohamed Muntaka.

According to him, the incumbent NDC MP has failed to provide the needed development to improve upon the lot of the constituents.

Five years ago the NPP aspirant constructed a 28-seater Aqua privy place of convenience for the people at Quamana, at Aboabo No. 2 in the constituency, out of his own resources. Nana Antwi has indicated that he would work for the establishment of a health facility to serve the constituents, if he gets the mandate to represent the people in Parliament.

He said for a long time now, the constituents have had to rely on the Manhyia Polyclinic, which is already over stretched, for their health needs.

To further endear himself with  constituents, the 50-year-old Kumasi businessman who has been  a  resident of the  constituency for the past  23 years, has been providing  support for needy  but brilliant students over the years, even before he nursed the  ambition to contest the seat.

Periodically he visits and socializes with groups of physically challenged persons and widows at Asawase New Zongo.

Nana Antwi, currently a household name in the constituency, has supported about 120 persons to acquire employable skills in tire and die making and soap making. The aspirant plans to supply selected Junior High Schools in the constituency with a quantity of Basic Science Workbooks 1, 2 and 3 to promote education.
